Electronic Cigarettes: How Do They Work?

According to the French National Health Insurance and the French Ministry of Health, in 2021, 32% of adults in France reported smoking and a quarter of them on a daily basis. Less harmful to health than traditional cigarettes, electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes are becoming more and more popular. They are quickly being adopted as an alternative to traditional cigarettes and a solution for smokers quitting tobacco.

What is an Electronic Cigarette?

The electronic cigarette was invented by Chinese Pharmacist: Hon Lik. His goal? Allow smokers to reduce their tobacco consumption while continuing to consume nicotine. Smoking a puff cigarette or a conventional electronic cigarette is a good tobacco substitute for quitting smoking, in the same way as chewing gum, patches, or lozenges.

While traditional cigarettes produce smoke by burning tobacco, an electronic cigarette emits vapour. E-cigarettes, therefore, contain no tar or carbon monoxide, which considerably reduces the health risks of daily consumption.

Conventional Electronic Cigarettes and Puff Cigarettes: Components and How They Work

An electronic cigarette is a device made of three elements: a junction box, an e-liquid reservoir, and a heating element.

The Junction Box

The junction box is the external power supply for the electronic cigarette. On a conventional electronic cigarette, this is the part you recharge by removing the battery and plugging it into a power point or directly connecting the e-cigarette to a USB cable.

The E-liquid Reservoir

The reservoir, also known as the atomiser or clearomiser, contains the e-liquid. The “drip tip” mouthpiece of the cigarette brings the liquid transformed into vapour to your mouth. The e-liquids are made of vegetable glycerine, propylene glycol, and food flavourings. You have the option of e-liquids containing nicotine, ranging from 0mg/ml to 20 mg/ml (in France.) You can gradually decrease the nicotine dosage if you want to stop smoking.

The Heating Element of an E-cigarette

The heating element produces vapour by heating the e-liquid contained in the reservoir. Depending on the model of electronic cigarettes, there are different shapes, sizes, and resistance characteristics. Their value is expressed in two units:

  • OHMs (Ω), ranging from 0.15 to 2.5 OHM
  • Watts, such as 12w-20w, 35w-50w, or even 50w-75w

You need to choose a power output adapted to your e-cigarette model. If the power is too low, the e-liquid will not be heated enough, causing low vapour production. On the other hand, if the power is too high, you could burn the heating element, causing the e-liquid to spill into your mouth.

How to Use an Electronic Cigarette?

Charging the Battery

In order to use your vape, you need to make sure that the battery is sufficiently charged. Unlike a conventional e-cigarette, a puff cigarette is a single-use device and does not need to be recharged. To maximise the lifespan of a puff cigarette and make it more eco-friendly, X-Bar offers the Click & Puff: a hybrid model that allows you to change the battery when you change the cartridge without throwing away your device.

Fill the E-liquid Reservoir or Insert the Pod

While it is necessary to refill the reservoir of a conventional vape, the e-liquid is already included inside a puff cigarette. You no longer need to check if the reservoir is full: the blinking light on the puff cigarette tells you if there is no more e-liquid, which avoids the risk of dry burn and thus optimises the lifespan of the heating element.

X-Bar offers a wide selection of premium, ready-to-use e-liquids in a variety of flavours, such as:

  • Classic Tobacco
  • Strawberry Milkshake
  • Cool Mint
  • Blueberry
  • Pink Lemonade
  • and many more

You may also want to check out our pods, which allow you to avoid refilling your puff cigarette. Simply insert the pod which is pre-filled with e-liquid into your vape and enjoy a vaping experience free from inconvenience or mess.

Electronic Cigarette Maintenance

While puffs require minimum upkeep, you will need to take more care of a conventional e-cigarette to maximise its lifespan. Make sure to:

  • Clean the battery’s screw thread with cotton dipped in rubbing alcohol to improve the electrical current contact
  • Clean the clearomiser by running it under warm water and letting it dry for 24 hours
  • Replace the clearomiser every 6 months and the heating element every month

FAQ

Is It Better to Vape an Electronic Cigarette?

While a traditional cigarette contains 4,000 toxic chemicals, the e-liquids used in puff cigarettes contain none. While tobacco use in any form is not recommended for your health, electronic cigarette users have a lower risk of developing diseases related to tobacco use and have much better chances of quitting smoking.

Why Vape Instead of Smoke?

While a traditional cigarette produces tar and carbon monoxide by burning tobacco, the heating element of an e-cigarette produces vapour, which is free of toxic substances. By vaping, you can also reduce the amount of nicotine contained in the e-liquid and gradually reduce your tobacco consumption.
