Why Does My E-Cigarette Taste Burnt? Causes and Solutions

A harsh puff, a dry, hot feeling on the tongue, a smell of scorched cotton: a burnt taste is one of the most common problems in vaping. It affects tank systems and pod e-cigarettes alike, and it often appears without warning, on a device that was working perfectly the day before.

In the vast majority of cases, there is nothing mysterious about it. It means the coil is heating without being fed enough e-liquid. This guide explains the possible causes, how to identify them depending on your device, and the habits that stop the problem from coming back.

Nicotine is addictive. Vaping products are for adults only and may not be sold to minors. If you do not smoke, do not start vaping.

Where Does the Burnt Taste Come From?

Every e-cigarette works on the same principle: a coil, meaning a metal wire wrapped in a cotton wick, heats the e-liquid soaked into the cotton and turns it into vapour. As long as the cotton stays wet, the temperature stays under control, because the energy is used to vaporise the liquid.

When the cotton dries out, even partially, the coil keeps heating but no longer has enough liquid to vaporise. The temperature of the wick then rises sharply and the cotton starts to scorch. Vapers call this a “dry hit”. The burnt taste is its direct consequence.

A second, more gradual mechanism is coil build-up. Over time, residue settles on the heating wire. It eventually caramelises and gives a cooked taste that sets in little by little, without the sudden harshness of a dry hit.

The Most Common Causes

Puffs Taken Too Close Together

Taking puff after puff without a break, known as chain vaping, is the leading cause of a burnt taste on small devices. After each puff, the cotton needs a few seconds to re-soak by capillary action. If you inhale again before then, the coil heats a wick that is still dry.

Inhalations That Are Too Long

An inhalation lasting more than a few seconds uses up the liquid held in the wick. The end of the puff then happens dry. On draw-activated pod e-cigarettes, an inhalation of two to three seconds is usually enough. We explain the right technique in our guide on how to properly inhale vapour.

A Pod or Tank That Is Almost Empty

When the e-liquid level drops, the wick is no longer fed evenly. The last puffs of a pod are often the ones that taste burnt. On a pre-filled system, it is a sign that the cartridge needs replacing. On an open system, simply refill the tank before the level reaches the coil’s liquid inlets.

A New Coil Used Too Soon

On open systems, a new coil must be primed before first use. Its cotton is dry straight out of the packaging. Without a few drops of e-liquid placed directly on the wick and a few minutes of rest once the tank is filled, the first puff burns the cotton. This damage is permanent: a coil burnt from the start keeps that taste until it is replaced.

Power Set Too High

On adjustable-power devices, a setting above the range shown on the coil makes it heat faster than the cotton can be fed. The recommended range is engraved on the coil or printed on its packaging. Draw-activated pod e-cigarettes, such as the Click & Puff battery, have no power setting, so this cause does not apply to them.

A Clogged or Worn-Out Coil

A coil has a limited lifespan. Very sweet or heavily flavoured e-liquids clog it faster. The taste then deteriorates gradually until it becomes clearly burnt. On a pre-filled pod, the coil is built into the cartridge and wears out as the liquid is used up.

An E-Liquid Unsuited to the Device

An e-liquid very high in vegetable glycerine is thicker. It flows more slowly through the small coils of compact systems, which are designed for thinner liquids. The cotton is fed less well and dry hits come sooner. This only applies to systems you fill yourself: a pre-filled pod contains a liquid formulated for its coil.

Identifying the Cause for Your Device

What you notice Likely cause What to do
Burnt taste after several puffs in a row, gone after a break Cotton not yet re-soaked Leave a few seconds between inhalations
Burnt taste on the last puffs of a pod Pod almost empty Replace the pod
Burnt taste from the first puff of a new coil (open system) Coil not primed Replace the coil, then prime the next one properly
Taste slowly deteriorating over several days Clogged or worn coil Replace the coil or the pod
Burnt taste on an adjustable-power device Power too high Return to the range shown on the coil
Burnt taste with a device that is unusually hot Overheating Stop using it and let it cool down

If the device becomes unusually hot as well as tasting burnt, stop using it and read our article on why an e-cigarette overheats.

What to Do When Your E-Cigarette Tastes Burnt

Take a Break

If the burnt taste appeared after a series of puffs taken close together, put the device down for a few minutes. The cotton re-soaks and the normal taste often returns on its own. If it does not, the wick has probably been damaged.

Replace the Cartridge or the Coil

Cotton that has genuinely burnt cannot be repaired. Cleaning makes no difference, because the damage is inside the fibres of the wick. On an open system, the only solution is to replace the coil. On a pre-filled pod system such as Click & Puff pods, the coil is part of the cartridge: simply remove the used pod and click in a new one. Never try to open or pierce a pre-filled pod to refill it.

Check the Contacts and the Mouthpiece

Traces of e-liquid or condensation on the contacts between the battery and the pod can disrupt heating. Remove the pod, wipe the base and contacts with dry paper towel, then put it back. Our guide explains in detail how to clean your e-cigarette without damaging it.

How to Stop the Burnt Taste Coming Back

  • Leave a few seconds between puffs, especially on compact devices.
  • Prefer short, gentle inhalations to long, forceful draws.
  • Replace the pod as soon as vapour drops noticeably, without waiting for the last drop.
  • Prime every new coil on an open system and let it rest for a few minutes after filling.
  • Stay within the power range shown on the coil if your device is adjustable.
  • Use an e-liquid suited to your device, thinner for small coils.
  • Store your pods upright and at room temperature, away from sunlight and heat.

Is a Burnt Taste Dangerous?

A single dry hit has no lasting effect, but it should not become a habit. Laboratory studies show that when the coil heats dry, the temperature of the wick rises sharply and emissions of unwanted compounds, including aldehydes, increase markedly compared with normal use.

The burnt taste therefore acts as a warning signal. If you notice it, do not keep going: take a break or replace the cartridge. Continuing to vape on a burnt coil serves no purpose and produces lower-quality vapour.

If the burnt taste persists with a new pod, the problem may lie with the battery or the contacts. It is sometimes accompanied by a harder draw: in that case, read our article on an e-cigarette that no longer draws, then contact the brand’s customer service if nothing changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get rid of a burnt taste in my e-cigarette?

If the cotton has only dried out slightly, a break of a few minutes is often enough. If it has genuinely burnt, the taste will not go away: you need to replace the coil, or the whole pod on a pre-filled system.

Why does my new coil taste burnt?

Most often, it was not primed. Its cotton was dry at the first inhalation and scorched. A coil burnt on first use must be replaced. For the next one, place a few drops of e-liquid on the wick, fill the tank and wait a few minutes before inhaling.

Why do I feel a burning sensation on my tongue when I vape?

It may come from a dry hit, but also from vapour that is too hot because the power is set too high, or from a nicotine strength that is too strong for your use. If the sensation persists without a burnt taste, check the power setting and the strength of your e-liquid.

Can I keep vaping with a burnt coil?

It is not recommended. A burnt coil does not return to normal operation and produces lower-quality vapour. Replace it, or replace the pod on a pre-filled system.

Can a pre-filled pod taste burnt?

Yes. Even though its liquid is formulated for its coil, inhalations that are too long or too close together can dry out the wick. This also happens at the end of a pod, when the remaining liquid is no longer enough to feed the cotton.

How long does a coil last before it burns?

There is no fixed lifespan. It depends on the type of coil, the e-liquid used, how often you vape and how you inhale. On a pre-filled pod, the coil is designed to last as long as the liquid it contains.
